Course Description:

A complete formation program for new and aspiring chaplains: the chaplain's calling and role, spiritual formation, the ministry of presence and deep listening, crisis intervention and trauma-informed care, ministry across the lifespan, grief and bereavement support, working within hospitals and institutions, and specialized chaplaincy settings — ending with a graded final examination and the Saint Michael's Certificate in Basic Chaplaincy Ministry.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define the chaplain's role and distinguish it from pastoral, counseling, and clinical roles across healthcare, hospice, correctional, workplace, and first-responder settings.

  • Map the recognized pathways to chaplain certification — certifying bodies, faith-group endorsement, and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) — and construct a personal certification plan.

  • Establish a sustainable personal spiritual formation practice, articulate their own tradition, and serve people of any faith or none without imposing their own convictions.

  • Practice the ministry of presence: deep listening, comfort with silence, and a calm, non-anxious presence in pastoral encounters.

  • Apply crisis intervention and trauma-informed care principles, including the opening moments of a crisis visit and support at the time of a death notification.

  • Provide age-appropriate spiritual care across the lifespan, from childhood through old age.

  • Companion the dying and support the bereaved through grief and bereavement care.

  • Function professionally within institutional systems — documentation and charting, interdisciplinary teamwork, ethics, boundaries, and confidentiality.

  • Adapt spiritual care to specialized settings, including mental health, addiction recovery, military and first-responder communities, and correctional facilities.

  • Build a sustainable ministry practice grounded in self-care and supervision, and assemble a professional portfolio demonstrating readiness for certification.
